Plain words about what Abney is, what is yours, and what we ask of you. Reading time: two minutes.
What Abney is
Abney is a photo desk that runs in your browser. Your library is a folder on your computer and your photos stay in it. A free account holds your projects and lets you share your work two ways: a desk shared with people you invite, who each sign in, and a public link to a photo or a book, which anyone holding the link can open without an account. Both upload previews of those photos to our servers so they can be seen. Nothing else leaves your machine.
It is a beta
Abney is young and provided as is. Things will break. We work to keep the sharing service up and your data intact, but we make no promise of either, and we are not liable for losses that come from using it. The design protects you where it matters most: your originals never leave your computer, so the worst day for our servers is still a fine day for your photographs.
Your photos are yours
You keep every right to the photographs you import and share. Uploading previews gives us permission to store them and serve them back on your behalf, and for nothing else: to the members of a shared desk, or to whoever opens a public link you published. We do not use your photographs for anything beyond serving that share. Stop sharing, or take the link down, and that permission ends with the deletion of the previews.
A public link is yours to give out and yours to withdraw. While it is live, anyone holding it can open the page and see the picture, so publish only what you are content for a stranger to see.
What we ask
Share only what you have the right to share. No unlawful content, and nothing meant to harass. Do not use the invite mail to spam people, probe the service for holes, or scrape it. We can suspend accounts and remove shares that do these things, and we would rather never have to.
The service can change
Features may change or go away while Abney finds its shape, and we may update these terms as the service grows. If a change matters, this page says so, with the date below. Using Abney after a change means the current terms apply. These terms are a beta too: honest, short, and due a lawyer's pass before Abney is anything more than one.
